Let’s Socialize

Promoting the benefits of social networking and healthy relationships.

I think it is really great when we are going on with our normal day and then we stop to take the time to talk with someone who shares something with us.  Sometimes that little something gives us the chance to reflect on experiences that we have recently had.  Maybe we learn something from our ability to reflect.  Other times that little something provides us with validation that someone else has gone through something similar to what we have gone through and had a similar result.  This helps us to be know that we are not alone in our experiences and that we can learn from each other.  Maybe we feel reassured that our situation will also turn out okay.

Recently I had something shared with me that was inspiring and motivating enough that I wasn’t just excited, but it even caused me to take action to make changes and to decide to share the same information with others. It is truly great to have experiences in our lives where we are able to really connect with others about an idea, an experience, or things that we are passionate about.  This is something that each of us searches for on an ongoing basis.

If we are not finding connections and developing relationships with others, then we are not able to share our ideas, experiences, and passions. As human beings, we all need some level of connectedness with others.  It is up to each of us to understand what amount or level of connectedness that we need.  When we are not feeling understood, when we don’t feel like we can relate, or we feel that no one truly “get’s us,” we need to take a step back and decide what it is that is important to us and what type of connection to others are we seeking to share.  Since we are responsible for our own happiness, we need to understand what type of connection that we seek to make us happy. What types of connections do you seek?

Let’s Socialize

Promoting the benefits of social networking and healthy relationships.

It’s the simple things in life that mean the most to us.  Being able to talk to others is not just something that we like to do, but we need to do it.   Socializing with others is part of our happiness.  However, this doesn’t mean that all of us are social butterflies though.  The need to socialize is different for each of us.  Some of us like to have companions to walk together with, while others enjoy having conversations over dinner.  Sometimes we are looking for families that we can interact with together with our family.  Whatever the activity, building relationships is an important part of each of us.  It is one way that we share our experience of the world with others.

Our own needs for socialization drive the expectations that we have with our interactions with others.  Those of us who are introverts will very likely choose settings quite different from those of us who are extroverts.   Social networking groups often use activities as the focus for people to find common interests.  Whereas, other groups focus on facilitating people to meet each other, in order to provide opportunities for socializing with people in the area.  One could also consider the differing networking opportunities offered to individuals, as compared to couples, families, groups, or communities, which allows for a variety of experiences & relationships to be formulated.

We have many opportunities to enjoy the company of the people around us.  The next time you think about socializing, ask yourself one of the following questions.  Who would you like to social with or what activities would you like to do on your own, as a couple, as a family, as part of a neighborhood or community?  Do you have people who you socialize with who you can relate with as an individual, as a spouse, as a parent, & as a neighbor?  We all like to be around others who make us feel happy.  What opportunities to meet others or to experience doing something should you consider next?

Let’s Socialize

Promoting the benefits of social networking and healthy relationships.

Too many times our interactions with others do not promote the results that we desire.  Focusing on the differences, rather than the commonalities that we share with others, ends up causing negative results.  The video attached below is an example of this.  What a different social network we would all have if each of us centered our focus on the commonalities we share with others, rather than our differences.  When we seek to find common ground, we find connections.  Our connectedness is often found in our pursuits and goals, whereas other times simply in our methods.  It is true that there are many ways of doing things.  However, when we share our ideas and experiences, we can increase our awareness of circumstances, discover a larger range of options, and be offered efficient, cost-effective, timely, and qualitative potential outcomes ahead of time.  Wouldn’t that be nice, huh?  Social networking at it’s best leads to endless discoveries within relationships fostered upon common ground.

Let’s Socialize

Promoting the benefits of social networking and healthy relationships.

Relationships, such as between a nurse and a patient, foster a response that, hopefully, is positive.  Understanding the coping skills, the optimism, and the changeable environmental factors of individuals and communities can offer solutions for health promotion, including mental health.  Problem-solving and self-management skills given to people and populations enable change.

The events we experience creates opportunities for personal growth.  For some, this develops confidence, self-esteem, self-acceptance, and empathy (Ruddick, 2013).  For one out of two people affected with mental health illness, childhood stresses and challenges do not foster these skills or resilience (Ruddick, 2013).  One’s belief of their state of wellness and personal control of their life determines their ability to change and to seek relationship support (Ruddick, 2013).  The interconnectedness one feels in a community promotes healthy behaviors related to exercise, diet, sleep, and less substance usage (Ruddick, 2013).  Social and economic burdens for home and work environments result in nearly one fourth of personal and employer mental health care costs (Ruddick, 2013).

A whole-person approach that includes individual responsibility, solution-focus, and individual-led initiatives benefits overall health and mental illness (Ruddick, 2013).  Self-help skills enable individuals to identify barriers, choose solutions, and generate specific goals.  Those who teach people, such as nurses, to cope with stress, as well as to strategize for health improvement, illicit positive partnerships.  It is in our relationships with each other that trusting networks and supportive resources are cultivated to promote health.
